My husband got this recipe several years ago from a co-worker of his who had brought this dish to their weekly potluck. Guys swapping recipes? (It happens)
Anyway, I never did meet the woman behind the dish, and so never got the chance to ask her about the name. I just figured she probably made this every year on the 4TH and wanted to keep it simple.
This is another one of those dishes that I can bring to any potluck or neighborhood BBQ and there's never a drop left in the pot. Sweet, savory, and incredibly delicious! Enjoy!
Ingredients:
1/2 Lb bacon, cooked and crumbled
1/2 Lb ground sirloin
1 medium sweet onion, chopped
1 28oz can pork & beans
1 can butter beans, drained
1 can kidney beans, drained
1 can garbanzo beans, drained
1 can diced tomatoes w/liquid
1/2 cup BBQ sauce
1/2 cup ketchup
1/2 cup granulated sugar
1/2 cup brown sugar
2 Tbs mustard
2 Tbs molasses
1/2 tsp chili powder
Directions:
Brown your ground sirloin along with the chopped onion in a large stock pot, drain fat if you prefer. (I don't do this.) Next, stir in BBQ sauce, ketchup, mustard, sugars, molasses, and chili powder; mix well. Add in all beans, tomatoes, and bacon crumbles. Stir well and simmer uncovered on low for a good 30 minutes. I like to cook a few extra slices of bacon to crumble and sprinkle on top just before serving. (It's a texture thing) So good!

This sounds like it would be great. I will have to give it a try.
ReplyDeleteHope you are having a good week.
These are good. My mom used to make these all the time, but she called them Settler beans. They are a family favorite.
ReplyDeleteWow, that picture is amazing. I am drooling.
ReplyDeleteThanks, Niki!
DeleteSounds delish! I may try this as a side with with dinner tomorrow night. It will be perfect with my "garden dogs". Hot dogs with sliced tomatoes, bleu cheese crumbles, pickled savoy cabbage, and spicy brown mustard. And even though I call them garden, I have to crumble some bacon over the whole thing!

I made these 4th of July beans for the 4th of July, and they were ridiculously good! My local store didn't have butter beans so I substituted with white kidney beans, but it was fantastic! Thank you!
